Statistics Make BBC Headlines

Statistics micro-trend

In Mix magazine issue 19, released in March, we reported on statistics as a micro-trend to look out for. BBC’s Newsnight recently asked two to graphic designers, David McCandless and Neville Brody, to discuss the growing trend for “pretty” infographics, leading to a heated debate. You can view the discussion on BBC iPlayer here.

Mix has found that infographics have quickly become a visual treatment applied to everything from packaging to wall coverings. See our focus on materials that follow this statistical micro-trend in Mix issue 21, due out on Monday, buy ordering your copy here.

Fresh Material Perspective from Shmuel Linski

Firstly, apologies for the lack of updates. At Mix HQ we have been busy putting together the latest issue of Mix magazine which, after a lot of colour research and graphic design expertise, has just been sent to our printers, Lechte Medien, ready for release on 13 August. Packed full of vital trend information for Autumn/Winter 2011/12, it’s definitely a design essential. To pre-order your copy, contact us at marketing@globalcolor.co.uk.

While researching, we discovered Israeli student Shumel Linski’s reworking of a Lavazza espresso machine. Cased in concrete, the conceptual project challenges the idea of the value and desirability of materials, particularly those that are often overlooked.

Look out for more concrete over the next month on e:mix’s blog as we embrace August’s colour of the month, revealed on Monday.

Mix Issue 20 – Glass: Apothecary

In the latest issue of Mix, we previewed glassware trends, including a piece that is credited to Lina Huring and Maria Johansson. This piece is actually the work of Helena Svennson, a friend and co-designer of the aforementioned designers. Apologies for this mistake, accuracy is key in Mix but sometimes mistakes slip through.

Regardless, Helena’s portfolio is definitely worth checking out. We love her Move On Up bench which takes advantage of exposed fixings by turning them into a graphic element of the design. She will be exhibiting in Sweden in September; watch this space for more information.
