Polished and ready for the hearth, copper was one of the metallic stars at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York, appearing in accessories, wall covering prints and lighting. Whether glowing in a subtle powder coated chair at Damian Velasquez’s Half 13 or gleaming in full on polish on Tom Dixon’s cast Jacks accessories or Jeremy Cole’s Blossom light fixture, copper carries the mantle of sage colour and new metallic hue. Beyond its roots in hearth and home, copper also has proclaimed health benefits and has a new place as a material of value. Indeed, when coating the inside of pendent fixtures at Gabriel Scott, copper became a precious thing as it glinted within the dark surface. Though not the only metal on display, copper’s visual richness garnered attention and, according to designers and attendees, heralded a welcome transformation of metal hues from cool to warm.
