In Mix Trends issue 25, Autumn Winter 2013/14, Neanderthal is a dark, moody grey, part of the Flint trend, an idiosyncratic take on back to basics, referencing prehistoric man through natural materials and primitive craft applications. Of course this grey, with its strong potential for the contract industry, plus its ubiquity in furniture and fabrics (although not, it has to be said, accessories), transcends any specific trendand counts as one of those timeless colours that never goes off the agenda.
Its popularity at the moment is also informed in no small part by the increased interest in polished concrete for flooring and surfaces. The Italians certainly can’t get enough of dark grey; it was central to the 2013 Zanotta collection, appearing on soft and hard furnishings and also featured heavily for B&B Italia, not least for the dramatic Papilio range of outdoor furniture, designed by Naoto Fukasawa (pictured). We expect to see much more of this colour throughout this month’s shows.
