The design competition ,now Bienal de Diseño CONTEMPO, started around 2007 under the leadership of Phil Rourk, Director for USAID’s Export Promotion Program in El Salvador. Its main goal (to date) is to help promote Salvadoran Designers abroad.
Since the very first CONTEMPO in 2007 the design competition did one more edition under USAID’s Program. Also in 2007, Emma Schoenenburg was recruited to handle a new category for the now named “Bienal de Diseño CONTEMPO”. The new category was Surface Design. In 2009 the competition flew on its own under the hands of Isabel Muyshondt and that year the Museum of Modern Art (MARTE) decided to take the competition and host it turning it into a Bienal.
Many have asked Isabel and Emma why they help organize this design competition; they believe in the Salvadoran talent they have found, it will offer designers opportunities to grow and will raise the country’s image internationally. Over the years, CONTEMPO has steadily raised awareness about the design talent in El Salvador. This year (the 5th edidtion) is quite impressive and the organizers and MARTE believe the international judges, including our very own Mark Woodman of Global Color Research and Will Arriaga of Us2 Productions, will have a hard time selecting the winners.
Taking place October 7-10, the 2013 edition of Bienal de Diseño CONTEMPO is a cause for celebration of design and color as well as the emergence of exciting new talent.
